The Lawless Lawyer

⭐⭐ 2/5

Bong Sang Pil (Lee Joon Gi) goes from a gangster to a lawyer to avenge his mother's death. Ha Jae Yi (Seo Ye Ji) is a righteous lawyer, who gets suspending after she assaults a judge. Disheartened by the system, she joins Bong Sang Pil in his fight against powerful and smart enemies. Their adversary is a corrupt judge Cha Moon Sook (Lee Hye Young) and gangster-turned-Mayor Ahn Oh Joo (Choi Min Soo). Bong Sang Pil and Ha Jae Yi relentlessly fight for justice, and punishment for the corrupt, against all odds.

The basic story of revenge and justice is okay, even though it is full of loopholes. But the dialogues and direction are straight out of a Tamil masala movie starring Dhanush (acting in Rajinikanth style), and Rajinikanth acting as the villain. 😏😏😏

All the actors are really good, and have given their best, no doubt about it, but this was not a role that Lee Joon Gi was suited for. He is too skinny and short to play the role of a powerful thug who can take down multiple men in one fight. Bong Sang Pil does a lot of grandstanding which eventually makes him fall flat on his face. The only person who has not acted over the top is the actress who plays the evil judge (Lee Hye Young). Choi Min Soo's interpretation of Mayor Ahn Oh Joo has been copied completely from Rajinikanth's over-the-top acting. The transformation of the scary loan sharks into a comedy group was simply unacceptable. They were supposed to be comic relief, but they made me cringe in every scene that they were in. Also, I don't understand why Bong Sang Pil and Ha Jae Yi have to announce their every move, in advance, to the enemy.

This drama tries to make the viewer feel stupid for watching it. After one stage, I just gave up on it, and decided that I was going to assume that this was a Tamil masala movie rather than a high-quality Korean drama. If you're into this kind of genre, or if you're a fan of any of the actors, then do watch it. Else, stay away.
